Family Day Holiday

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

We enjoyed our Family day holiday this year by watching a couple of movies - a rare treat! There never seems to be enough time to sit in front of the tube... Lots of snowmobilers were out - the sun was brilliant and the temperature was not too cold. We had lots of rain last week that knocked back some of our snow, so now instead of 6 foot snow mounds, they're about 3-4 feet! More snow is forecast for this week, so conditions will be great this upcoming weekend.

BRRRRR!!

We woke up this morning to -37C windchill...that's an aweful lot of minus!! How do animals survive in this??

Some very cool nature sightings this past week - our neighbours had a bald eagle in their backyard! They were able to get some pictures of it resting at the top of a tree as well as in flight. Amazing!

We had a couple of electricians working at the side of our house...they asked us if our white ferret got out because it was at the side of the house watching the workers... We don't have a ferret! So, I called the fractional cottages next door to see if someone was up visiting and lost their pet ferret. It was suggested that perhaps it was actually a weasel. Apparantely, they turn pure white in the winter. Ross investigated and YES - it was a "wild" weasel! Check out this link to learn more about them: http://www.saskschools.ca/~gregory/animals/weasel.html

Now here's something for anyone out there to answer for me: normally, we have lots of mice in our house in the winter (the joys of living in the country!). This year, I haven't spotted a single one...is there a correlation between having a weasel living at our house and the missing mice? Here's the next part of the mystery - for the first time ever, we have carpenter ants walking around in our house - if the mice are missing and the ants are here, does that mean that the mice usually eat the ants??? Ah, the mysteries of nature!
