Electricity - A Modern Wonder!

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

There was a terrible windstorm over most of Ontario this past Saturday night with winds reaching almost 100 km/hour. A downpour of rain quickly turned to snow and ice coming at us horizontally - the result, of course, was that we lost electricity once again. We had the pleasure of living like settlers for 3 days until Hydro-One was able to restore power to our area. Being without electricity is kind of a blessing - we realize how much we enjoy reading by the fireplace, playing games, and telling ghost stories. I'd forgotten how long it takes to boil water for tea on a woodstove! It was the best cup of tea that I've had in a long time!

We sure appreciate our neighbours at times like this. We had a power line come down by "E" cottage and our neighbour and his brother-in-law came to the rescue! It's quite a sight to see-3 grown men afraid to climb a ladder and trying to negotiate who would go up first! In the end, the power line was repaired successfully. We also thank our good friends Chris and Malini who offered us their "Supper And Shower Special" at their place in Hidden Valley! Thanks guys - we owe you one!

Power was restored last night - just in time for -20C overnight. Whew! Today was the catch-up clean-up day. There are still so many tree limbs and branches on the ground. They are now for the most part covered in snow and ice - we'll have to wait until the Spring thaw to clean up Mother Nature's mess!

Tonight, we will be celebrating New Year's Eve at 2 different locations with 2 different families - how can we choose only one? We're very excited about the year 2009 and all the possibilities that it will hold for us.

We wish you a Happy New Year!

Snow, Snow, Snow...

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Only 15 days until Christmas!!! We are definitely in the holiday spirit here in our winter wonderland! I've tried to add a few pictures to let you see how much more snow we've had in a very short time - but the computer didn't want to let me do it - I'll keep trying... By the way, we're already tired of bundling and shlepping around in our boots...it is very beautiful, though! Our children have their Christmas Concert next week, so lots of practicing has been happening. I've realized that there are only so many carols that I can stand before I turn into Scrooge! :-) The house is decorated and the Santa plate is ready. Our girls received their letters back from Santa today - they were SO excited! I was too, when I read the note from Santa saying he wanted me to leave my home-made cookies out for him! Maybe I'll get an extra-special present this year - I have been pretty good!

SNOW DAY!

Monday, December 1, 2008

Wow! Our first snow day of the year already! We had about 15-20 cms of snow last night and more forecasted for today! It's the perfect kind of snow too-just wet enough to make it packing snow for snowmen! School buses were cancelled, much to the delight of our children...but, they still ask to go to school so that they can play! Go figure...

Agenda for today: snow shovelling, snow plowing, snow blowing.

I saw the first snowmobiles tearing around a few days ago - of course, the snowmobile trails are not officially open yet, but that doesn't seem to matter. Our lake, Lake of Bays, is still completely open so ice fishing is not yet a great idea! :-)
