Olympic Torch in Huntsville!

Sunday, November 23, 2008

The following is an announcement from the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce:

"We are thrilled to announce some very exciting news!

"Huntsville has been selected as one of the Canadian communities that will host the Olympic Flame as it travels from coast to coast to coast in the 100 days leading up to the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

"This announcement has significant impact for Huntsville because not only is the torch running through our community; it is stopping here. Huntsville has been given the honour of hosting a Regional Celebration.

"One of our community members will have the privilege of gracing the stage for the lighting of Huntsville's Olympic Cauldron as thousands gather round and feel the energy of the Olympic movement.

"A big thank-you to the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Sport Council along with Huntsville High School student Sophie Lovell and her fellow students from the HHS Activators Group for their tremendous work in gathering community support to bring this amazing opportunity to our area.

"It is important to also commend the work of Mrs. Auckland's class at Huntsville Public School for the wonderful postcards they sent to the Olympic Torch organizers. These efforts clearly demonstrate Huntsville's enthusiasm and eagerness to host this amazing national celebration.

"Some interesting facts about the Olympic Torch Relay:

· The Olympic Torch Relay will start in Canada in late October 2009, and continue for approximately 100 days, concluding at the Opening Ceremony, in Vancouver, on February 12, 2010.

· The Olympic Torch Relay will visit every province and territory, passing through over 1,000 communities and places of interest across the country.

· The route will be designed so as many Canadians as possible can partake in the relay.

· The route is 45,000 kilometres: This will be the longest national Olympic Torch Relay ever.

· A total of 12,000 torchbearers will carry the Olympic Flame. Each torchbearer will carry the flame with an individual torch.

· Each torchbearer will run or walk for approximately 300 metres.

I snapped a couple of pictures today to let you see what a beautiful winter wonderland it is!

Photo from the office looking out to the volleyball area, the Duplex cottage, and E cottage.

Photo from the office looking toward the playground and campfire area:

A great view of "E" cottage at the beginning of our winter season!

Photo of the office entry way - we usually get so much snow that in a few weeks we will be shutting down the office entry and using the side door entrance instead.

November?

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Hallowe'en is over and it's officially November; however, we are now having our second day in a row of 20C heat and sun in Muskoka! It feels like summer! In fact, I've seen several people walking around in shorts and t-shirts in Huntsville - those crazy town people!

Today, we took advantage of the great weather to get ready for winter...chairs have been stacked for storage, the leaf blower has been busy getting rid of the huge amount of fallen leaves and needles, the playground equipment is now stored in the barn, and the archery "stuff" has all been packed away. Even our Canada and Ontario flags came down today.

Over the next month or so, our website will be getting updated - new larger photographs of the cottages, an extra section on winter rentals (we rent mainly to snowmobilers in the winter for the full 3 months of January/February/March), easier to use links, etc. We're also looking into getting a webcam so that you can check out what's happening at our cottage resort - LIVE! We're not great tech people, so we'll see if/when it gets up and running (no idea on what's involved...). Failing that, we'll get some shots on this blog to let you see what's happening. We've also just started a Face Book page - it's still under construction - which is a fancy way to say that I haven't had a chance to sit down and fill it up yet. :-)

The following photo is of Fred and Ursula Franklin who visited us this summer - they stayed here when the 1st Generation of Tapley's were here at Logging Chain Lodge! They told us lovely stories of what it was like here 50+ years ago - much, much different than today!
