The Big Melt

Saturday, January 12, 2008

We had the most amazing early winter - there was about 4 feet of snow between Christmas until last weekend. All of the snowmobile trails were open and, I was told, that the trails were in fabulous condition. Lake of Bays was almost completely frozen and thick enough to put the fish huts on. We had a great morning of cross-country skiing at Arrowhead Provincial Park last Saturday. Then...rain. I can't remember when it rained so hard, or for so long in Muskoka! We lost about 3 feet of snow within approximately 48 hours. This was followed by terrible flooding in many parts of Huntsville and region. Many homes that are located in flood plains (why build there in the first place?) and lower areas were flooded and the families were evacuated. Thank goodness, no one has been hurt. I was in Huntsville today and the river is still so high downtown, that the town docks are completely submerged. The forecast is for clear skies for the next few days and no precipitation - we're keeping our fingers crossed! The rivers should start lowering soon...

Our resort is at "No Vacancy" once again this winter. Our winter guests are mainly snowmobilers who rent for the full winter season (January, February, and March). Sorry to all of you who are trying to book cottages with us this winter - we thank you for your interest! Check out the following website for additional local resorts that may be able to help you: www.north-muskoka.com . Our next vacancies are for the second week of April.

Our summer bookings are at 54% already. Don't wait to book!!! We've never seen a summer book up so fast...thank you!! We're starting to plan activities for this summer. A couple of the plans involve: a group kayak/canoe trip to visit Marsh's Falls; family archery night; our very popular giant sling shot evening (bring your eggs and fruit!); and our Kid's Craft Program. The Kid's Craft Program will be changing a bit this summer...it will be held only on Monday and Wednesday morning from 9:30 - 10:30/11:00. Stay tuned for more information about the Kid's Craft Program as we get closer to summer.

Snow!

I've taken a bit of a break from the resort (and our blog) for the past 6 weeks while working on Human Resources projects off-site. Check out the new website: www.abtraininghr.com . It's still a work in progress... We drove to Toronto last week to do some Christmas shopping at Bass Pro - in all honesty, it's great to get back to the city from time-to-time because it reminds us why we moved away!!! Too much traffic, too many people pushing and shoving - why is there such rudeness?? We happily drove back to our resort and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of Lake of Bays and our property.

Yesterday, while driving to town, a huge beautiful wolf crossed the road in front of me. It is a VERY rare thing to see a wolf here and most locals have never seen one! We hear them now and again when they are calling, but to actually cross paths with one...well, it was breathtaking. In four long strides it was from one side of the road to the other and gone into the bush.

Today, we woke up to a fabulous, picture-perfect snow day! We received about 10 centimetres of snow during the night - and luckily, only lost electricity for about an hour.
