BACK ON-LINE!!

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

We are finally back up and running!!! It appears that our internet, WIFI, and e-mails are travelling without any problems - much to our great relief...

We've been having the most spectacular weather this week - sun, sun, and more sun! It's around 30C at the moment.

Last Friday, after another few days of heat wave, we had a tremendous lightening, rain, and wind storm. Of course, anyone who lives in the country (i.e., who has electicity lines through the woods/bush) knows what follows in my story - we lost power! When our resort was built, the original lodge - now our office and home - received its power (and still does) from electricity lines on the Dwight Beach Road. When the cottages were built, the electrical lines were pulled in from Highway 60. Sounds pretty straight forward, except when the water treatment system is involved. Normally, after there is a bad storm and we lose power, the Highway 60 corridor has power back up within a few hours. This is what happened on Friday evening and our guests had electricity in the cottages. Unfortunately, without power in the main office building, the water treatment system (Ultra Violet ray lights, filters, chlorination treatment system) do not work. So, the cottages did not have any water. For our family, that meant no water or electricity. We were without power for 28 hours. Finally, on Saturday evening, everything returned to normal.

Our guests were great during this situation created by Mother Nature!! The toilet facilities will still work without running water (by gravity, of course, into the septic sytems) - so we provided large containers of water for the occasional flush. I like to call it "Elegant Camping". :-) So, thanks to our guests from this past weekend for being so understanding!!

I have to note that power outages in Muskoka are quite common. It makes the argument for "off-the-grid" (meaning living without relying on traditional electricity suppliers) all the more powerful. We've looked into alternative sources of energy - solar, wind - and are very interested. However, the price point on this new technology needs to become more realistic before we can ever get serious about switching. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who owns a business similar to ours that has started to make the switch!

Internet Challenges - Please use the phone!

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

We've been having some BIG challenges with our now former internet service provider. To make a long story short, this particular company cancelled our service in error (without notifying us or being requested by us). We have had a local fellow set up a satellite internet system for our WIFI; however, we are still waiting for a few cards to enhance the service. We hope to have the system back up and running at full capacity by this Friday, June 8th.

In the meantime, some e-mails are not getting through to us - how do we know?? People are using the old fashioned telephone to tell us!!! Thank you to those people who have informed us that we still have a problem!!!

For the next few days, if you would like to book a cottage - please phone us!!! 877-635-2575

I'll let you know in this Blog when we are back up and running...

I think technology is great (when it's working, that is)!

Fun In The Sun

Lots of sun today and swimming at the all sand beach!! We reached a humidex rating of 32C. There's a forecast for possible thunder storms with all of this heat and humidity - hope it happens, we could use the rain...
